Acceptable Use of myelearning application(s) by a user assigned to a role with elevated permission:
1.1 Introduction
The MOODLE Learning Management System (LMS), re-branded myeLearning, provides a common easy-to-use Virtual Learning Environment that promotes student centered learning by facilitating collaboration between teachers and students through electronic course delivery within of the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine campus (STA UWI).
In order to facilitate management of the myelearning application(s) roles are created with elevated access. Elevated access is rights and privileges beyond those given to the teaching and learning community that enable electronic course delivery.
Users with accelerated access can be defined as users who have been assigned roles with a higher level of access to the myeLearning application(s) than Teacher, Editing Teaching Assistant, Non-Editing Teacher, Student, Guest and Guest Lecturer roles.
These roles include but are not limited to System Administrator/Administrator and Faculty Liaison.
Users assigned to these roles will have permission to access/modify some if not all of the following functions within the myeLearning application(s):
- System Functionality, i.e. system configurations.
- Reports
- Users
- Courses categories
- Activity Reports
- Gradebook
- Resources
- Activities
Usages with elevated permission pose a possible security risk to the myeLearning application(s) of STA UWI. Thus this policy defines what constitutes acceptable use of the myelearning applications(s) in order to mitigate the vulnerabilities/risks posed by these users. 2 Acceptable Usage Policy for Users with Elevated Access to myeLearning Environment(s)
1.2 Purpose
The STA UWI is an institution of higher education, dedicated to education, scholarship and the pursuit of knowledge. The STA UWI’s myelearning application(s) are provided, operated and maintained for the use of members of staff, where applicable - registered students and other authorized persons in furtherance of the aims and objectives of the STA UWI in teaching and learning. Users with elevated permissions for the STA UWI’s myelearning application(s) have access to sensitive data and intellectual property. Consequently, it is important that they use the application(s) resources in a responsible, ethical and legal manner. In general, acceptable use means an accountable, rational and appropriate exercise of a freedom to use while respecting the rights of other users, intellectual property rights and the integrity of the STA UWI’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) resources.
1.3 Scope
The policy is binding to all users of the myeLearning application(s), be they staff, students or otherwise.
2. Acceptable Use
STA UWI’s myelearning application(s) are to be used solely for teaching and learning.
3. Unacceptable Use
Use of the STA UWI’s myelearning application(s) is a privilege extended by STA UWI to its staff, where applicable - registered students and others. Any use of the myelearning application(s) of the STA UWI will be considered an unacceptable use if it:
- Conflicts with the aims and objectives of STA UWI
Or
- Breaches any statute or ordinance of the STA UWI
Or
- Could result in legal action being taken against the STA UWI
Or
Examples of unacceptable use include, but are not limited to:
- Intentionally circumventing or compromising the security controls or integrity of STA UWI myelearning application(s).
- Intentionally denying access to myelearning application(s) where appropriate authorization has been acceded.
- Using or accessing any STA UWI myelearning application(s) information or data there within, without proper authorisation, or in a manner inconsistent with the authorisation.
- Conducting commercial activity not duly approved in writing by the University.
- Using the STA UWI myelearning application(s) information or data there within, to misrepresent or impersonate someone else.
- Using the STA UWI myelearning application(s) information or data there within, for any purpose which the STA UWI deems obscene or offensive.
- Acceptable Usage Policy for Users with Elevated Access to myeLearning Environment(s)
4. Penalties for Unacceptable Use
Where there is evidence of unacceptable use, the University may restrict or prohibit the use of its
myeLearning application(s). Violations of this policy shall be treated in accordance with applicable University Statutes, Ordinances, Rules and Regulations.
Training
It is strongly suggested that any user with elevated permissions complete ‘An Introduction to myeLearning’ and any other relevant training with the Centre of Excellence for Teaching and Learning (CeTL), in order to effectively use the myeLearning application(s).
User Acceptance
All users with elevated permissions to the myelearning application(s) of the STA UWI are required to sign this document, or otherwise signify acceptance of this policy, and thereby commit to abide by its provisions. This document covers rights and privileges within myelearning, outlined in Section 1.1 above.
I understand that the STA UWI provides, operates and maintains its myelearning application(s) to support its teaching and learning activities.
I understand that my assigned access credentials (including user names and passwords)
identify and allow my access to the STA UWI myelearning application(s) and that I am accountable for the secrecy of my access credentials. I also accept that I am responsible for all actions committed through the use of my access credentials.
I understand the STA UWI has the right to audit my use of its myelearning application(s) at any
time and for any reason, including determining compliance with STA UWI or other
information security requirements.
I will comply with the STA UWI Acceptable Use Policy and accept that as a user of the myelearning application(s). I have a responsibility for the security of that system(s). To the best of my ability I will
protect the STA UWI myelearning application(s) from unauthorized use, destruction or disclosure, whether accidental or intentional. I agree to be bound by the current version of the STA UWI Acceptable Use Policy for Users with Elevated Access to myeLearning Environment(s), which will be freely available to the STA UWI community.
I understand that abuse of these requirements, and others, which may be declared in the future,
may result in disciplinary and/or legal action.
I hereby acknowledge that I have read and understand this policy and agree to be bound by the conditions herein.
